Avene Cicalfate Repair Cream is free from SkinCarisma flagged Sulfates
Sulfates are a large group of ingredients which act as cleansing agents in Cosmetics. They help loosen up the dirt and grime from your skin and hair to allow for water to wash it away with ease. However some sulfates are so good at their job, they can wash off your skin’s own natural oils that keep it moisturised and protected which can lead to dryness and irritation. Most people will find no issues with sulfate, however if you find your skin doesn't like sulfates then free feel to avoid them by looking out for the sulfate-free icon on Skincarisma.
We've taken the Sulfates which are considered more harsh for our Sulfate-Free status. A product will be Sulfate-Free if it does not contain any of the following Sulfates:
I have always had a love-hate relationship with my skincare, often damaging my complexion by trying too many new products too frequently (after all, I review beauty products for a living!). Think high-potency retinol at bedtime, powerful vitamin C in the morning, LED masks in the evening, and exfoliator before bed.
The following week might include a microdermabrasion facial and a cocktail of glycolic acid, hyaluronic acid, peptides, a new sunscreen and facial oil.
You get the idea.
Add to this the time when I had to undergo radiation for cancer. Millions of watts of killer strength lights aimed at my face and neck. Picture the most severe sunburn and intensify that sensation by about 50 times! And it wasn’t just the visible burns but the pain beneath.
Then, my dermatologist sent me a care package of Avene Cicalfate+ and Tolerance Control. Many of these products were so nourishing and calming they were recommended for post-procedure skin. And if anything can soothe the immediate after-effects of things like laser therapy, chemical peels (and radiation!)) trust me, it occupies unicorn status in the skincare world.
And since the first rule of Distressed Skin Club is to use as few products as possible, this one became my go-to.
After two weeks, the sting of pre-existing burns was significantly lesser. And from the third week, I could sleep at night without crying every time my skin touched the sheets.
Fast forward a month post-radiation and my skin was on the mend — with a stronger barrier, better hydration, an even tone, and visible healing.
So, once I felt better, I delved into this cream’s ingredients. And since then, I haven’t stopped handing out tubes to friends and family — for sunburn, eczema, acne scars, dryness, sensitivity… the list goes on!
PS: The fact that celebrities like Hailey Bieber, who have their own skincare lines, are devoted fans is just an added talking point!
The Cicalfate+ Restorative Protective Cream is a French staple for adults, kids and infants. It’s designed to hydrate ultra-dry skin, protect skin from factors that compromise the skin barrier and relieve discomfort. The formula relies on postbiotics to restore the ever-important skin barrier, glycerin to attract and retain moisture and Avène’s proprietary thermal spring water to soothe redness and add an extra boost hydration. It’s fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, gets the stamp of approval from the National Eczema Association and is dermatologist-recommended for even the most sensitive skin types.
Based on its thicker texture, slathering on an ultra-rich cream may seem risky and daunting, but think of it like slugging, sans the sometimes pore-clogging petroleum jelly. Stick with it and your subsequent clear and baby-smooth skin will speak for itself. After cleansing and serums (this should be the last step of your skin-care routine), I apply a nickel-size amount on my face like I would a mask. And while it does leave a temporary white cast, the only place I’m off to is bed, so no issue here. (Fans of using in the morning recommend waiting a few minutes before applying any other product.) Come morning, the protective cream melts into skin, leaving it looking healthier, more plump and glowy then the night before.
Avène’s Cicalfate+ cream truly does it all, and shoppers want you to know it. One reviewer unhappy with “long, deep wrinkles” from dehydrated skin said their skin is “elastic [and] healthy” and wrinkle-free after using Cicalfate+ for two weeks. A second credits it with relieving “chronic dry patches and itchiness.” A third customer says Cicalfate+ is “healing, calming, and doesn’t congest the skin.” More reviews say it works like “magic” to treat perioral dermatitis, “great to use after retinol” and “excellent for rosacea.”
