Caring for all of the skin on my body is not always on my list of things to do. Ok, it's never on my list. For some reason, any skin below my neck doesn't get the few minutes of body care it deserves. I'm not sure why hydrating my body feels like such a chore, and even though I know that our skin is the body's largest organ, I still neglect it. Even my shoulders, back, and decolletage are an afterthought, even with the seemingly never-ending breakouts in these areas.

Ahead, find my review of this salicylic acid lotion.

Best for: Dry, textured skin

Uses: Hydrate and exfoliate your skin

Potential Allergens: None

Active Ingredients: Salicylic acid, lactic acid, hyaluronic acid, and ceramides

Price: $19

About the Brand: CeraVe is a dermatologist-recommended skincare brand founded in 2005 that formulates a range of skin and body care items.

About My Skin: Combination, sensitive, and acne-prone

The skin from my neck down isn't nearly as sensitive as the skin on my face. Thank goodness. However, I can't say I do the best job of moisturizing each day. Like my face, I have breakouts, hyperpigmentation, and scarring, but my body has another self-induced hurdle to jump through at times—scaly, dry skin. When seeing those physical indicators of dryness crop up, I scrub my entire body with a physical exfoliator, but I rarely add moisture afterward.

Like most lotions, this one was creamy and best of all, the formula soaked right into my skin without leaving behind any greasy residue.

Since one of the ingredients is hyaluronic acid, I applied it to my skin while still damp, and the formula melted right in.

Unlike some exfoliating body lotions, this one has no scent. I kept waiting to smell it, and I even sniffed my skin to make sure my nose wasn't deceiving me, but there was no overpowering scent.

What is magnesium lotion used for?

"If your muscles are extra tense as you're trying to fall asleep, you can't get good sleep," she explains. Also, we know that when you're very anxious and stressed about things, and you are all tensed up in your back, your neck, et cetera, even if you do fall asleep, you're more likely to wake up because of all that muscle tension. So having a way to relax the tension in your muscles can really improve sleep overall."

Dr. Oyegbile-Chidi says there's limited research 1 that shows magnesium supplementation can help improve sleep, and even less to show the impact of topical magnesium. But, based on anecdotal evidence, sleep doctors often recommend magnesium to help their patients. "It makes sense that magnesium will help," she says. Because magnesium lotion can relax muscles, Dr. Oyegbile-Chidi says it can be especially helpful for those managing restless leg syndrome (RLS).

And, in addition to being helpful for your sleep hygiene, magnesium body lotion is also great for your skin. "Magnesium has the benefit of preventing dry, flaky skin, which can be caused by an increase in the stress hormones cortisol and adrenaline," Susanna Saiu, former International Trainer and Technical Education Manager of Ren Skincare, previously told Well+Good.

If you're on the hunt for something to help your body relax before bed or are just looking for something nice to fold into your sleep routine, keep scrolling to browse the seven magnesium body lotion options below.

Ingredients: Skincare ingredients in body care form

With all of the ingredients packed into this lotion, there's a reason this drugstore formula is dermatologist-recommended and a beauty industry darling. For starters, the active ingredients, alpha hydroxy acids salicylic acid, and lactic acid are chemical exfoliators that smooth and gently slough away dead skin. On the other hand, the formulation's ceramides protect the skin barrier, lock moisture into your skin, and protect the skin's epidermis from environmental damage while hyaluronic acid boosts moisture.

The formula is non-comedogenic, fragrance-free, and dye-free, meaning it's perfect for a wide range of skin types.

Don't let this gentle formula fool you. Since it has exfoliating ingredients, it is important to protect your skin with sunscreen or sun-protective clothes.

It is recommended to use this product on dry patches first to make sure your skin isn't sensitive. Lily Talakoub MD, FAAD, recommends testing it on areas like your elbows, knees, and keratosis pilaris on the back of the arms. According to Dr. Talakoub, try to avoid more delicate areas like the groin, underarms, breasts, other creases.

How lotion works

Your skin is an organ. Its job is to keep the outside out and hold your insides in.
Your skin’s structure is similar to that of a wall: It has bricks (dead skin cells) and mortar (oils and water) and a sealant (more oils) on top. Just because the skin cells are dead doesn’t mean they are useless—they contain proteins and fats that trap water, which keeps your skin healthy.

When skin gets dehydrated, two things happen: Allergens, microbes, and anything else that can get under your skin have an easier time doing so, and skin can’t shed its excess cells properly. “Our skin really is our first defense against the outside world,” said dermatologist Dr. Papri Sarkar. The result is dry, rough, scaly skin. “Ashy skin” is what a too-thick layer of dead skin cells looks like.

If you want to add moisture to your skin, you have to apply moisturizer to wet skin to trap excess water inside.

This means by the time you notice that you have dry skin, your skin’s self-healing processes are already overwhelmed. Ideally, you use a lotion to prevent dry skin before it happens. If you wait until it’s already dry, lotion can protect your skin while it heals, but does little to actively heal it.

Moisturizers add a thin layer of oil to the skin’s surface to replace the sealant and prevent water from evaporating. So if you want to add moisture to your skin, you have to apply moisturizer to wet skin to trap excess water inside. According to dermatologist Dr. Cynthia Bailey, ideally, your skin will already be soaked—wet for more than five minutes—and you’ll apply the moisturizer within three minutes (our other two dermatologist experts agreed).
