Key Ingredients: Peptides, niacinamide, marula oil, fatty acids | Fragrance: None | Size: 2.4, 6.8, 13.5 oz | Cruelty-Free: Yes
Our editors have been loyal fans of this body lotion for years, so it’s no surprise that it scored highest during testing. Formulated with a blend of five peptides (which are great for firming), fatty acids, shea butter, and a combination of nourishing oils like marula oil and meadowfoam oil, it works to quench dry skin, leaving it soft and moisturized. It also contains a dose of niacinamide to do a number on dark spots while contributing to a healthy skin barrier.
This powerful combination of moisturizing ingredients left our skin feeling comfortable and hydrated—sans a greasy residue. The texture feels like a nice hybrid between a liquidy lotion and a rich cream, making it suitable for daily use year-round. It absorbed into our skin quickly, allowing us to easily slip into our clothes just a minute after application. We also love that it’s fragrance-free—so it won’t compete with perfume or irritate reactive skin. We’re giving bonus points to the brand for offering it in multiple sizes and making the packaging simple, elevated, and functional.

One little bottle of body lotion can do great things for your skin. Choose a formula based on just how dry your skin is, then apply it daily post-shower on still-damp skin to maximize the benefits. As Ina Garten would say, how easy is that?
Unlike body wash, body lotion does not need to be washed off. The opposite it true, actually. Body lotion is meant to be left on the skin in order to moisturize the skin and leave it feeling healthy and smooth.
Should you put body lotion on before or after a shower?Byrdie takes every opportunity to use high-quality sources, including peer-reviewed studies, to support the facts within our articles. Read our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we keep our content accurate, reliable and trustworthy.
It's a good idea to consider the area of your body you're moisturizing. While you can get away with using the same formula for your limbs and torso, Dr. Greenfield underscores the importance of choosing a very thick, very occlusive formula for hands and feet. "The skin on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet is the thickest skin on the body, and is also subject to harsh environmental conditions," she explains. "Thicker, more occlusive formulations are tolerated by the skin in these areas and help lock in moisture for the many cell layers."
Both experts we spoke with say that body lotion should be used at least once per day, ideally after showering. "It’s especially important to apply body lotion after a shower," says Dr. Idriss. "The hot water and steam can really dry out your skin, especially during the winter, and moisturizing right after the shower also helps to lock in the moisture already on your skin, keeping it soft and hydrated." In short, not only is moisturizing post-shower an easy way to remember to make it a part of your routine, but it also will help maximize the effects of said moisturizer.
Lightly towel dry your skin—it should still be somewhat damp—then apply a generous amount of lotion all over and rub it in with your hands until it's fully absorbed, suggests Dr. Greenfield. She adds that you can also use a tool, such as a spatula, to help reach difficult spots such as your back.
