About the Ingredients: Rich and hydrating

Like all La Mer products, one of Crème de la Mer’s key ingredients is the brand’s signature anti-inflammatory Miracle Broth, a fermented mixture of sea kelp, vitamins, minerals, citrus oil, eucalyptus, sunflower, wheat germ, and alfalfa. Its second key ingredient is lime tea, an antioxidant concentrate consisting of lime rinds and alcohol. With algae (seaweed) extract listed as the very first ingredient and the others closer to the top of the list, we can assume that it contains an effective concentration of all. We asked board-certified dermatologist and Mohs surgeon Dendy Engelman her thought on the ingredients and she explained that between the Miracle Broth and the lime tea, this formulation has several benefits for the skin.

It's worth noting that Crème de la Mer has a fresh, floral scent that we found to be quite pleasant. We didn't experience any reactions while testing, but those with fragrance allergies or particularly sensitive skin might want to skip this one.

If you've flipped open just about any beauty magazine in the last decade, there's a good chance you've seen a (seemingly) poreless celebrity proclaim that their secret to perfect skin is La Mer's Crème de la Mer, the moisturizer that's arguably more iconic than The Beatles. Its origins are the stuff of mythic proportions: German rocket scientist Max Huber allegedly spent 12 years and 6,000 experiments perfecting the Crème de la Mer formula, which he claimed healed the burns he suffered during a lab accident, before releasing it to the public in 1965.

After finally mastering the cream's "Miracle Broth," essentially the cream's fermented base that takes three months to make (and involves playing specific sounds at specific frequencies to "activate" the elixir), Huber began selling jars for $85 an ounce and sharing samples with the elite. Pretty soon, word spread. Everyone from a true believer countess to skin-care fanatics swore by the rejuvenating cream. Huber was such a champion of his product, people say he even ate it and dabbed it in his eye—he claimed it was good for digestion and that its healing properties could help with eyesight (these claims have not been proven, FYI).

How to Apply: Scoop, warm, and massage

As mentioned, in order to "activate" the Miracle Broth, you'll need to warm the product in between your fingers until the thick cream became translucent. Once it's thinner and more translucent, pat it into your skin. La Mer recommends using it both day and night, but we felt it was too heavy for daytime and chose to just use it at night.

While we've already talked about the not-so-favorable residue, it's undeniable how soothing this cream is for dry skin. It's gentle yet sends rough patches of skin packing, and helps to hydrate and plump the look of aging skin. "While this product isn't for everyone, those with dry or mature skin looking for moisture will find that it's excellent," Engelman says. "La Mer's Crème de la Mer yields transformative results and has stood the test of time."

Crème de la Mer is pricey, ringing in at $200 per ounce. It’s available in multiple sizes, the bigger the jar, the better the deal (we tested from a 2-ounce jar, which costs $380). Keep in mind, you’re not slathering this stuff all over your face—you’re meant to use it sparingly, so it will last longer than a typical moisturizer. However, we do think that you could find an equally effective product for a lower price.

  • It's great for dry skin: With ultra-hydrating ingredients and thick consistency, it locks moisture in.
  • It may clog pores: Its occlusive properties may be too much for oily and combination skin types.
  • A little goes a long way: As such, the jar will last longer than some of the other moisturizers on the market, which slightly helps to justify the price.
  • Other products are equally as effective: While Crème de la Mer is undeniably effective, many other options will yield similar results for a fraction of the price.
