A panel of seven testers tried our 10 lotions with their labels covered. Testers noted the lotion’s smell and texture, how easy it was to rub in, how their skin felt after a few minutes, and if they could feel any residue. Three testers took top-ranked lotions home for long-term testing and considered how the lotion felt over a larger skin area and when worn under clothes, and how easy it was to apply after a shower. 3
All the lotions we tested—even those without added fragrance—had some sort of scent. It was often a faint chemical or gluey smell, although some lotions’ odors were stronger. None smelled like nothing at all. Scent was the most divisive quality in testing. Our testers frequently disagreed over what constituted a good scent, even among “unscented” lotions, and strong feelings (positive or negative) about a product’s smell often overrode any other considerations.
The yellow-tinted cream pumps out a formula thick enough to frost a cake. With a bit of massaging, Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula absorbs deep into the skin (you can actually feel it hydrating beyond the surface) without leaving behind a greasy feel, so don't worry about leaving oily fingerprints on everything.
The bottle boasts a "24-hour moisture" label, but to be honest, I've woken up the next day and still felt like my skin had a hydrated bounce to it. Up until I shower and wash it off, I can still feel that my skin has moisture in it.
Now that you've decided to try some lotion and oil hacks instead of comparing body oil vs. lotion, where do you start? Choosing the right supplies puts you on the skincare road to success!
Which oil is best to mix with lotion? A lightweight but emollient moisturizing body oil with cocoa butter and Vitamin E sets the stage for healthy and hydrated skin. Add 1 to 2 mL per 16 ounces of lotion. When it comes to how to mix essential oils into lotion, you can follow this same recipe, though the results will vary by the type of oil used — lavender and thyme are used frequently for soft skin. Do your research before choosing an essential oil.
You can choose to use a body lotion or cream, though, with the addition of the oil, a traditional but outstanding lotion such as daily skin therapy lotion works perfectly as the carrier for the oil. Simply adding a few drops of oil to your lotion can heighten the benefits of these powerhouse products!
For best results, always cleanse skin thoroughly before adding oil and lotion so you're starting with a fresh, clean surface for best absorption. You may not feel you need the extra hydration all year, but combining the power of oil and lotion is a great way to stave off dry winter skin, soothe sundrenched skin or even summer skin that sits in a cold, air-conditioned room all day!
So stop questioning body oil vs lotion, and combine them for the best of both worlds! Check out Palmer’s Hand & Body Care for the best body oils and lotions and get glowing today.
