Perianal streptococcal dermatitis is a cellulitis of the perineum. The most common causative organism is group A beta-hemolytic streptococci. Therefore, perianal streptococcal dermatitis is treated with both oral and topical antimicrobials. This dermatologic condition is a disease of children and often presents in the winter and spring months. This activity reviews the evaluation and management of perianal streptococcal dermatitis and highlights the role of the interprofessional team in evaluating and treating patients with this condition.

When you have an itchy perineum, it’s natural to contemplate treating the itch with topical corticosteroids. These anti-itch creams can work well on other parts of the body, but applying them to the perineum isn’t the best choice. Steroid itch creams can have a skin-thinning effect, which could worsen symptoms or create new ones.
