Some children get mild symptoms, like fever, that aren’t distinguished from other normal childhood illnesses. Middle-aged adults first infected with EBV often don’t have any symptoms either.
Someone with mononucleosis might have symptoms like the following:
Most of these symptoms go away within a few weeks. However, fatigue from mononucleosis can be debilitating, and it may last for weeks or months.
Mononucleosis also occasionally causes a person’s spleen to enlarge. Very rarely, this can lead to a serious problem—spleen rupture. Mononucleosis also sometimes also causes other very rare but serious symptoms, like encephalitis.
It should be noted that although EBV is the most common virus that causes mononucleosis, other viruses, such as CMV, can sometimes cause it as well.
No treatment currently exists to directly treat mononucleosis. Pain medications, hydration, and rest are the main treatment approaches.
It can cause symptoms like fever, enlarged spleen, and liver disease. CAEBV can also impair the immune system, making people much more prone to serious infections and lymphomas.
To avoid catching the Epstein-Barr virus and getting infectious mononucleosis or CAEBV, avoid other people's bodily fluids (especially saliva).
Typical mono symptoms don’t show up until four to six weeks after the initial viral infection. An infected person can walk around spreading the virus for weeks before they have symptoms.
You can also pass the virus on after you’ve recovered from infectious mononucleosis because the virus stays in your body and can reawaken, especially if your immune system is weakened by another infection, by medications, or by other conditions.
If you’re worried about catching infectious mononucleosis, it’s essential to avoid other people's saliva, as EBV infects the mouth's cells. A few quick tips:
Vitamins and minerals play a role in a healthy immune system and may help to prevent EBV infections and reactivations of the virus. Studies show vitamin D may help boost the immune response to the virus. High-dose vitamin C therapy has also been shown to help clear EBV infections, which may help prevent reactivation.
