What Are the Signs & Symptoms of Molluscum?

Start as very small spots about the size of a pinhead.
Grow over a few weeks. They can be as large as a pea or pencil eraser.
Are soft and smooth and may have a small dent in the center.
Often are painless, but can get itchy, sore, red, and/or swollen.
Can get infected with bacteria if kids scratch or pick at them.
Can appear alone or in groups, or rows. Most people get between 1 and 20 bumps.
Can show up almost anywhere on the skin except for the palms and soles. In kids, they're most often on the trunk, arms, and face.

Znakovi i simptomi Molluscum contagiosum

Najčešće se očituje izraslinama (papulama) oblika kupole, boje mesa i veličine 1 do 5mm u promjeru . Smještene su u području trupa, ekstremiteta (ruku i nogu) i prepona. Lezije nisu bolne, no često mogu svrbiti. Grebanjem nastaju rane koje mogu krvariti ili se naknadno inficirati. Rijetko, u oko 10% slučajeva, oko lezije se može razviti ekcem.

Infekcija je lokalizirana na najviši sloj epidermisa, stoga cijeli bez ožiljka, osim u slučajevima grebanja koji dovode do oštećenja dubljih slojeva i superponiranih bakterijskih infekcija.

Središnja jezgra sadrži virus i jednom kad se uništi, lezije više nisu zarazne. Papule obično nestaju nakon 6 tjedana do 3 mjeseca, iako kod djece i imunosuprimiranih osoba mogu zaostati i duže.

How Is Molluscum Treated?

Most of the time, molluscum clears up on its own without treatment. Each bump goes away in about 2–3 months. New bumps can appear as old ones go away, so it can take 6-12 months (and sometimes longer) for molluscum to fully go away.

Sometimes, doctors remove the bumps or help them go away more quickly. To do this, they can:

Freeze the bumps off.
Scrape or cut the bumps off.
Put a chemical on the bumps to make the body fight them away faster.
Put medicine on the bumps or give medicine to swallow.

Many doctors don't recommend these treatments for kids, though. That's because they can be painful and burn, blister, stain, or scar the skin. When deciding to treat a rash, they consider where the bumps are and if they're causing itching, pain, or other problems.

Adviezen bij waterwratjes

Dit kunt u doen om tegen te gaan dat er meer waterwratjes komen:

Zorg dat uw kind niet aan de wratjes krabt.
Was de handen van uw kind regelmatig en houd de nagels kort.
Zorg dat uw kind niet met de handen in de ogen wrijft.
Doe een pleister op open wratjes waar geen kleding overheen zit.
Laat uw kind een eigen handdoek en washand gebruiken. Gooi de handdoek en washand na gebruik meteen in de was.
Droog de huid met open wratjes altijd als laatste af.
Zijn de wratjes open? Laat het kind dan niet met anderen in bad. Was het badspeelgoed af en laat het daarna drogen.
Plak voor het zwemmen een waterdichte pleister op de open wratjes.
Zorg dat de huid niet uitdroogt: douche kort en niet te heet. Was de huid het liefst met weinig of zonder zeep.
Gebruik zeep, crème en shampoo zonder parfum.
Bij eczeem is het belangrijk dat het eczeem goed wordt behandeld.

Uw kind hoeft niet thuis te blijven van het kinderdagverblijf, school of zwembad.

Complications

The most common complication of molluscum is a bacterial secondary infection. Secondary infections may be a significant problem in patients who are immunocompromised. This includes those with HIV/AIDS or those taking immunosuppressing drugs. In these cases, treatment to prevent further spread of the infection is recommended.
